Know who you are. Know where you’re going.

I needed to know what to do with my life more than I wanted the suspense to end over when I would fall in love and get married. Really, I did. Well, actually the strong desire to know both of these huge, life-shaping events was just the same.

I couldn’t make my husband appear on command, and naturally the spotlight moved to figuring out what I was supposed to do with my life. Many years would pass by until I realized actual reasons existed to explain why I couldn’t find my purpose. And not one of those reasons had to do with me thinking my destiny was to be stuck inside an average life. I had a good life and felt like I had no right to complain. But I wanted a great life.

What holds me back?

I wanted a promising future and had no idea how to reach it. I had two small clues about who I was without any idea who I could become. I had big dreamy feelings imagining I would capture a great future without having any idea what I could do or who I wanted to be.

On my journey to become more than who I was, the evidence showed I was the one blocking the way ahead. After the shock melted away, I began to process these new findings and made a list of what held me back.

I struggled to see the future. Confusion had a greater place in my life than clarity. Trying new things could be an impossible challenge with a fear of the unknown, and I doubted God was on my side as much as the Bible said He was. These poor qualities inside me battled with and overpowered the talent God had already created on the inside.

This four-part phrase sums up how my dreams turned into reality

  1. Believe God

  2. Tame your fear

  3. Know who you are

  4. Grab your life
